Central City building collapses, cars covered in debris in New Orleans

Debris fell on cars along with parts of the building in Center City

A building under demolition in New Orleans collapsed Thursday injuring two and trapping a third person, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.

The collapse happened just before 10 a.m. in the 1000 block of Canal Street in the Central Business District

The building is a six-story structure that was vacant. It was being demolished.

Debris fell on cars. No deaths, two injuries, one person missing so far

Debris from the collapse covered at least three cars in the street across the street from a CVS and the Roosevelt Hotel.

The third floor of the building collapsed onto the second floor, and the second floor collapsed onto the first floor.

Firefighters were able to rescue two people from the rubble and a third person was still missing.

Two victims transported to the hospital

Two victims were transported to a local hospital in stable condition. One person is still unaccounted for.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation.

The collapse comes at a busy time for emergency responders in New Orleans. The city is still recovering from Hurricane Ida, which made landfall in August.

The city is also dealing with a surge in violent crime. Last year, New Orleans had more than 200 homicides, the highest number in decades.
