Carlos Alcaraz digging Deep in Defence of Wimbledon Crown
Alcaraz Rallies Past Paul in Wimbledon Thriller
Wimbledon, July 10, 2024 - Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz survived a spirited challenge from in-form Tommy Paul on Sunday to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals. The Spaniard rallied from a set down to secure a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory on Court One.
A Triumph of Determination
Alcaraz, who won his maiden Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows last year, struggled to find his rhythm early on against the big-serving Paul. The American raced to a 5-2 lead in the first set and eventually took it 7-5 despite Alcaraz's late surge.
However, the Spaniard refused to let his title slip away. He broke Paul's serve in the second set's opening game and saved four break points in the sixth to level the match. Alcaraz's confidence grew with each passing game, and he began to assert his dominance on the baseline.
In the third and fourth sets, Alcaraz's relentless defense and powerful groundstrokes proved too much for Paul. The Spaniard broke Paul's serve four times in a row to close out the match and book his place in the last eight.
